Just got a stripped 97 boxster for free...

Ok, so Im in new orleans and of course I managed to get a silver 97 model.. It didnt flood but it did get stripped.

It is missing

Wheels and tires
Brake rotors, and calipers...
Tail lights
seats
cd player and factory amp... but the jerks cut the harness going to the amp.
It did not flood it actually still smells like a boxster and the winshield got beat up in the deal.
it is also missing the hood and trunk lid.
It also did not have a key.... How can I get a key cheap? I dont care if the electric clicker doesnt work, just want to be able to lock my doors and turn the ignition... Do you think any lock smiths could do it if I provided the blank?

bmussatti 02-11-2006 05:46 PM

That's going to become the most expensive "free" car in the world!

Welcome to the Forum!

Take your ownership papers down to the local Porsche dealer. For about $135, you can get a "bare key" that they will encode such that you can open the door and start the engine.

You can pay more for a remote but that is not needed to run the vehicle.

A regular locksmith cannot help you here, as you need to have the key encoded at the dealer.

Good luck.

The wheels and tires, taillights and stereo can be bought off eBay for a low price. Probably around $900 for it all. That should get you started on making it road worthy.

Am I the only who is SERIOUSLY interested to see how all this pans out? I mean what an opportunity for a major engine swap if I've ever seen one. Hell, lets see this sucker with a 996 turbo, nitrous - hell add a supercharger and a light speed drive. Stipped Boxster, Free - Opportunity of a lifetime - Priceless!!!!

blinkwatt 02-11-2006 11:55 PM

rx7partsman how did you come across the Boxster?

nautiquelfe 02-12-2006 03:12 AM

Sounds like a great oppurtunity to make something out of nothing. If your patient you should be able to find salvaged parts from ebay at a good price. I see sets of 16 and 17 wheels on classifieds for $300-$400. The other parts should'nt be terribly expensive, if you look for good deals. The only thing that would concern me are the unseen things that will need to be addressed. Keep us posted on your progress. And maybe you'll have some luck getting parts from guys on the forum. Welcome to ownership and good luck.

I found it under a bridge... It was abandoned from the hurricane. I applied for a salvage title...

Yea, maybe on E-Bay you can find the exact same ones that came off the car!

rx7partsman 02-12-2006 10:03 AM

ill get pics up in the next couple of days... does anyone have any trunk lids that I can buy? Or cheap rims.. I also need the air intake vents for both sides.

Brucelee 02-12-2006 06:58 PM

Try LA Rebuilders. They are a used Porsche supplier and usually have virtually everything you would need a decent prices.

RX7 i can see the opprotunity to make a track day car which will be cheaper to get going than full on road spec, cheap bucket seat one is only needed!
second hand track wheels and tyres, i am sure they are around and probably cheaper than original porsches, and whatever body parts that are needed in whichever color (no respraying)
a track boxster should be fun!

And I thought I owned the most expensive 97 boxster on this board! I sure am glad to see someone else with a worse-off car than me. Misery loves company.

The stuff you need from a salvage yard will cost you at least $3-4k in my estimation. But, if you can get that car in shape for $4k and have the trunk and hood painted to match, you might just get out with an under $10 Porsche to drive around.

Problem is that you will never get your money out of it. Plan on driving it for a long, long time if you do fix it up to driveable condition.

I PM'd you about a couple of the items you need that I have in my garage.

AtlantaBoxster 02-13-2006 02:59 PM

Sounds like a fun project. Keep us updated with photos and costs along the way. It will be good to see the progress.

Good luck!

I like this idea. If you luck out, as Randall said, you have a very cheap, very very cool ride.

Bestg of luck and keep us posted; we are here to help.

One more thought for you...

If making the car into a car again is too spendy for you, part the thing out completely and make a pile of cash on it.

The instrument cluster, engine, transmission, headlamps, body parts, brake booster, radiators, control arms, struts, etc. are all worth money on Ebay as guys like me need stuff like that as ours wears out. Of course, it all depends on how many miles were put on the car.

Call Porsche Parts Heaven for some parts.
