Mixing Oil & Temperature Question

Hi Everyone (and welcome to yet another oil question post, yes I searched first),

My mechanic recently did an oil change on my Boxster and used 0W-40 Mobil 1 Synthetic. Normal temperatures in my area are about 50-80° F throughout the year, however this year I will be spending a few months in a snowy area and I am expecting temperatures between 15°-70° F. My oil is a little low, and I want to top it off, but I am not sure what to use.

Firstly, is 0W-40 the correct oil for my normal temperatures of 50-80°? It does not seem right to me.

Second, what kind of oil should I top it off with? I have a bottle of Mobile 1 5W-30, but I am unclear about the consequences of mixing it with the current oil?

Lastly, the bottle of 5W-30 is about five years old, is it any good? I can't image it would go bad, but I want to check.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

This first figure (0 ) is the figure best for a lower temperature. A low first figure allows to oil to flow better at a low temp.

You should top up with the same 0w40

Use the bottle of 5W30 for your lawn mower, or throw away.

Thanks, topped off with 0W-40, I will consult at the next oil change about something more temperature appropriate.
