3.4L vs. 3.6L Engine Swap
 
Does anyone know the price for the 3.4L engine or 3.6L. I have tried contacting various companies such as Roock USA, RUF, and some cheap @$$ company who says they do "cost effective Boxster engine swaps" with no reply's did see on the FVD Website a 3.8L engine swap for about 24K which is a lot but considering the potency of the engine (I believe its the gt3 engine or new 997 engine) its sort of a bargain. Also, can someone tell how much $$ wil I be going to spend for the engine swaps and what other improvements would I need to do to my car in order for the swaps to occur ?

I have heard that possibilities are limited by means of the type / model-year of your car.

Earlier 986 type cars only have 3.4 possibilities.
Only latter 986 type cars have 3.6 possibilities.
Only 987 type cars have 3.8 997S engine possibilities.

This might be related to non e-gas and e-gas engines but might as well be a seperate criteria for picking an engine.

Furthermore note that, to my knowledge, a 997 3.8S engine is a completely different "beast" than a 996 3.8 GT3 engine. 997 3.8S engine is a MY96 type engine, just like the Boxster 2.7, 3.2, and 996/997 3.4/3.6 and now 3.8 engines. 996GT3 engine as well as the 996TT engines are derived from the completely different GT1 engine (and much better / more expensive)

If have never seen or heard of a Boxster with a 996 3.8 GT3 engine. I have heard of 987 conversions to the 997S 3.8 engine. I have also hear BoxsterS 3.2 conversions from Gemballa to twin turbo's reaching up to 450bhp. Whether they modify the original MY96 3.2S engine and put turbo's on it or put in a 996TT engine and modify it is beyond my knowledge.

Maybe the above is complete bull but those are my conclusions from what I have picked up from various boards.

Would love to know the _REAL_ answers...

Here is what Ruf Auto Centres says about the 987 on their web-site:


"2005-2006 Boxster S:

RUF offers a 3.8 liter 997 Carrera S Engine Conversion for the 2005-2006 Boxster S. Each conversion includes a crate motor from Porsche, complete RUF exhaust (headers, sport cats, muffler), RUF air intake, RUF tuned 997 ECU, all necessary wiring, hardware and labor.

The RUF 3.8 liter Boxster S conversion will yield 365hp and has the same reliability and maintenance intervals as a RUF 3800S and 997 Carrera."


The cost is about $40K!!!!

I doubt you'd ever get your money back out, even 25% percent of the engine upgrade.

I do love the idea though and have written about it here many, many times! I'd love someone on the forum to do an engine swap. My 1997 is a great candidate for it, but I'd much rather have a 987S that has warranty on it and doesn't need an expansion tank, O2 sensors, probably a MAF soon, etc.

It's all dollars and cents now.

So, I'm looking at earning and raising enough cash for a supercharger. Far cheaper (8k) and easily removed and adds tons of HP.

Now back in 1966, my brother dropped a 400ci Buick motor from the junkyard, into his 56 Chevy Bel Air Coupe.

If I recall correctly, he paid $200 for the motor and most of the other components mated (love those divisions in GM). Maybe we spent $500 total, I doubt we had much more to spend.

That car was really really fast in a straight line, and frankly, that is all we cared about. It was also very loud and could smoke the tires for about a city block. I love TORQUE!

He painted it flat black, threw some chrome wheels on it and we had the best summer our our lives.

$40K is a bargain man. Look at all the power you are getting.

Porsche is charging 997S owners $20K for the X51 upgrade which is just their version of the "exhaust, intake, chip" upgrade that hardly results in any big power.
Hmmm....buy a 2nd hand S2000 or a nice sound exhaust for my 911?

The $40k must be for the RUF conversion. You could probably get the swap for a lot less at a local shop. Some will install conversion kits I think, others will use engines from salvaged cars. These guys do it;

I don't know the price but got to believe it's less than $40K. From what I understand these motors also experience RMS leaks. Makes sense since I think the blocks are the same. Although I am guessing the crank is different for the longer stroke. Crank bore's probably the same. Can someone confirm?

Bargain is a relative term. For $45K, I can go buy a new C6 Corvette that already HAS 400 HP. That is for an entire car.

Hello, all,
I am new to the forum,
but within the next day or 2,
I should have finalized the purchase of my first Porsche,
(Having driven VWs exclusively for all my life)

1997 Boxster w/ 3.4 from a 2000 911.
Engine mileage: 40k (installed at 19k, so it is certainly sorted out)
I am not intimately familiar with all of the details of the swap,
but I know there was a different intake manifold involved,
and a custom ECU (from the Vaterland) involving reprogramming
the boxster ECU to work with the new engine.
Apparently the ECU is so intimate with the chassis of the car that it made sense
to reprogram this one instead of swapping to the 911 ECU.

I know there is more to it,
but those are the hilights as I recall them.

But, I certainly will have a fully functional example in the next few days,
so should be able to answer visually identifiable questions.
(If I decide I want to help someone else experience the glory, instead of keeping it all to myself!)
But, categorically brilliant swap.
Arguably the best car I have ever driven, not that that is saying a lot.
I could not speak more highly of this engine / chassis combo.
(Keep in mind the car is well sorted as well: S brakes, Eibach coilovers, corner balanced, good weekend track car)

Brad, Porsche thought the 3.4 was such a good fit that the new S's are all 3.4's albeit with even more HP and torque than your car.

I dream of taking my 97 and shoehorning a 3.6 or even a 3.8 in there.

Well, they don't have too much more power than I,
The new 3.4s are up to 310-320 hp, right?
(we had been thinking we had 300 stock hp, + chip and exhaust = 330-ish?)

All I know is it is plenty of engine for quite a while.
I have a lot of learning to do..

I have had one of almost every FWD VW,
but this really inspired both shock and awe,
when I put a whole tank of gas through it last week...

The cool thing is the car came with a driving instructor:
I found out after 2 days that with the suspension done,
and 18X8 / 10s, the only reason you should ever see the
TCS light is if you are not being smooth...
Once I started letting the light direct my cornering technique,
things got really cool. (and way fast)

but I digress...
I'm sure you guys will be hearing more from me once I actually buy this thing....
