Question on Top maintenance of Top control cables

I noticed today that there is a loud grinding noise coming from the rear of the convertable top when going up or down, everything is working correctly, plastic caps are not broken and all cables are intact. It appears the the noise is coming from the control cables. Is it possible that there starting to seize or fray inside the black outer jacket,is it worth pulling them and trying to lube them or better to just change them out,if i hold them while operating the top they vibrate bad. Does the transmission on either side have to be removed to get the cable off on the inside attachment point on the 987 model.thx
