3179cc engine vs HP
I was looking at some model info and saw that:
The 2000-2002 986 S engine of 3.179L displacement makes 250 HP, The 2005-2006 987 S engine of 3.179L displacement makes 280 HP! Presumably its the same core engine so how did they get the extra 30HP from it if the displacement is the same? Perhaps its also an opportunity for those with the older 3.179 engines to upgrade the performance with stock parts? |
variocam+
otherwise, the same things we do - intake, exhaust, tuning. 987 exhaust will fit on a 986. you can put a 9x7 intake (airbox, throttle body, plenum) on a 986. |
2002 S = 250hp VarioCam
2003 S = 258hp VarioCam+ & freer flowing exhaust & freer flowing side intake duct 2004 S Sp.Ed.=264hp 987 airbox,MAF tube & DME tweek & Sport exhaust bypass 2005 987 = 280hp DME tweek & greatly improved exhaust system incremental weight gain each year |
The Boxster did not see vario cam + till 2007.
The changes are mostly cylinder head, intake and ECU changes in the 05 engines. Port flow changed and the port margins intake/ exhaust are altered with the M97 cylinder head profiles. |
I stand corrected!

The cam timing advance is different in the 2002 and earlier and the 2003 +. The cam timing on 2002 and earlier is electro mechanical and shift the chain to change the timing between the intake and exhaust cams. There are five chain in these models. The 2003 + has a valve ported to a hydraulic clutch on the exhaust cam drive sprocket that shifts the cam position in relation to the chain and works off the engine oil pressure. These engine have only three chains

Thats explains why so many folks are trying to free up exhaust and intake, I guess theres a bit of hp to be had there.
I suppose having the heads tuned is the next stage up. Thanks for taking the time to explain, its appreciated. |
