I'm in houston and I used 5w40 if I can find it, otherwise I go with 0w40 M1.

You don't have to use M1 if you don't want to. There are other brands are just as good or even better

M1 0W40 for me. Easy to find locally... I change it early and often...

I use Castrol 0W-40 .
Changed every 10000 km
By the way I live in Gibraltar (Europe), and 5W-40 should be ok for here , but still . I use the 0W-40 !!
