oh....... lol  .... i thought you dipped your Carrera Lights.... from the title "Plasti-Dipped my Carrera Lights"

no but seriously, i'm thinking of doing my headlights, hood and bumper to protect them, and wheels because i hate cleaning dust and i think the wheels look better with brake dust

clean wheels:

How did you EVER let your wheels get that dirty?? Lol I definitely recommend doing the wheels. I chose the anthracite grey because it had a bit of metallic color to it and I clear coated over it. I'm assuming you are wanting to clear coat the headlights and bumper. I would recommend going with the 3M approach if you want the protection. The Plasti Dip, as good as it is, is still a rubberized coating and even the clear has a slight rough, rubbery texture.

I would try to contact Fonzie at Dipyourcar.com for his recommendations.

I am extremely pleased with how well the wheels came out and how easy it was to apply. I think it really modernizes the car and makes is a bit more sinister looking. I took my wheels off to thoroughly clean them instead of doing them on the car. I also did my lug nuts and they hold up very well. Is stuff is extremely durable. I wasn't happy with the finish on one of my wheels, so I peeled it right off and re-did it. Comes off as advertised.

+1 on plasti-dipped wheels - Especially for working cars!

j.fro, those tires are so sticky, they overcome gravity...

Is the photo opening upside down for you? It's right side up for me...anyone know a fix?

heliguy 07-08-2013 04:15 PM

Okay, it's right side up on my iPad...odd.

where did you get the crests for your seats?

Hi Heliguy / All,

please can you tell me how you get crests onto your 986 seats - Heliguy has a great pic but I cannot tell if they are stickers or an object stitched into the headrest?

any tips on where to buy/how to do would be greatly appreciated as I love my boxster but always wanted to do this mod to improve the look.

how did you manage to get those lovely crests onto the seats? are they stickers? or stuck on with glue?

aczyzewski 05-14-2016 08:09 AM

Wheels look great, especially against the silver

I am thinking about doing mine too, how long did it take you, tires on or off?, how many coats do you have on there?. Did you buy the kit from dipyourcar that included the cleaning agent, or just buy a few cans of plastic dip from the hardware store and wing it?

I've plastidipped several sets of wheels. I didn't use any special cleaner, just soap and water or some other regular wheel cleaner. My tires were still mounted on the wheels but they weren't on the car (I just spread them out on the back lawn). Use blue painters tape around the valve stems and to mask the tires. Painters tape is straight and wheels are round so you have to use a lot of small strips to get good masking coverage. Apply a total of one can to each wheel in multiple light coats (probably 10 or so). A lot of light coats work better than a couple of really heavy coats. Usually, by the time that I sprayed the other three wheels, the first wheel was already dry so I could mostly rotate through the set without waiting too long for drying (another advantage of light coats). Be sure to use a charcoal filtered painters mask so you don't inhale paint fumes the entire time. Well, unless you want to inhale paint fumes - I'm not here to judge. Total time was about 90 mins on a sunny day. That's it. Its really that easy.

I did those fabric head rest crests as well.

I used contact cement on both surfaces and after letting it set for a while I stuck them down. Its holding well since the cement is flexible as well.

Good quality fabric crests can be had for about $10 each shipping included from China.

I want to Black PlatiDip my racing set of wheels as well but I read that on tire changes the paint around the edges of the rim gets chewed up so I was thinking about a red stripe along the edge with regular paint.

I did my track wheels with Plasti-dip. I used black and then a light overspray with their metalizer and they look great.

I did them off the car. First a through cleaning with wheel cleaner and then wiped them down with alcohol. Since I was doing the barrels as well, I scraped off all the old wheel weight adhesive too. I also taped over the wheel weights with metal duct tape.

I did around 6 coats and taped off the tires so I did not have to deal with peeling it off of the tires.

I had new tires mounted to the plasti-dipped wheels and first removed all the dip from the barrel so when they put new weights on, they would be attached to the actual wheel, not the dip. The edge of the wheel did get a little scraped from mounting and it was pretty easy to touch them up afterwards. Probably more work masking the tires then the touching up.

I like the look and nopt don't really care how much brake dust is on the wheels as you can't really see it. After coming home from the track or AX, I give then a quick spray with wheel cleaner and then hit them with the power washer. Easy
