Redline...
Mine has a red dash at 7200. Someone else said 8600. I've never had the car to 7000. I've only owned trucks and lived at 4k max so I'm afraid to go that high! Is it safe to hit 7k on each shift??? Is the little dash light by the tach a red-line light?

Yes, 7000 is safe and so is 7200, though the stock 3.2 falls flat by 6800...

Redline is no worry.
After 60+ track days, where every shift is made at or near redline, my engine must have nearly 10,000 runs up to redline: upshift 4 times a lap x 10 laps a session x 4 sessions a day x 60 days = ~9,600 shifts at redline. I try not to bounce the RPM's off the rev limiter but occasionally do so. 126,000 miles and the engine runs perfect. And the Boxster engine is just starting to come alive at 4,000 rpm and if you're always shifting there, then you're missing a major part of the enjoyment of your car because at 4,000 rpm the Variocam timing unleashes the power and the exhaust wails the song of Porsche. My advice: Drive it like you stole it. |

Besides, a lot of folks claim that it is better to drive spirited and rev the engine, better for the IMS.
On a side note, after doing the larger throttle body no flat above 6,800 rpm :) |
I tried Red Lining today although I didn't go into the red zone I came pretty close in 2nd gear I don't know what the hell is has done to my car but now 2nd gear sounds like a Tractor accelerating.

Yesterday I took 2nd to 7k. Not by plan or intent just moving around someone. I looked down and there was 7K being pointed at. I had the stereo pretty loud so I couldn't hear. It happen so fast and smooth that it surprised me. I think had I not had the stereo on I would not have rev-ed so high. I'm sure those around me were really impressed by the A-hole in the Porsch...
After reading this thread, I'm glad in my case it did what the German's designed it to do without any fuss. I'm just bummed I couldn't hear what it sounded like. I hope your issues isn't to dramatic. Unfortunately it seems the German's have designed allot of that into these cars as well |
^^My stereo's just about useless to me because I like listening to the car much more.
I've got a base, so my redline comes in somewhere around 65-6700rpms, but getting up there is still fund and sounds amazing, even with the car as restricted and muffled as it is from the factory. I'm sure the larger engine sounds even better as it runs even higher. Redline driving is not harmful to the car if you've been taking care of it and you're not pushing the car to that point before it warms up. I tend to give the car a lot of time to get up to temperature before I go past 4k. My normal driving and warm-up time driving tends to stay below 4k, but unless it's a really short drive I take it past 5k in some of the early gears to let the car make some noise. You can also feel the slightest nudge forward as the VarioCam adjusts for 4k+ operation. If it were unsafe for the car, the redline would be down around 4k and make for a very frustrating car, lol. They limit it where they do because anything below that is safe operation. Like I said, as long as you're taking care of the car like you're supposed to, it'll do what it's supposed to. And like someone else mentioned above, when you're on the track or autocrossing, you need every bit above 4k that the car has to offer if you're going to make those guys in the 911s start checking their mirrors and the time cards more often. ;) |
