water pump level at min but drips

so I topped off my water pump and it drips after drive but only to the min. than seems to hold there. changed out updated cap.

should I replace the entire pump?

thks in advance.

It's not clear what is dripping. Is it the tank in the trunk or the water pump in front of the engine. Either way, you should change our whatever part is leaking.

If you are saying your water pump is leaking coolant, YES replace it immediately, this is the best way to find out your pump is failing.

embryoguy@mac.com 03-23-2013 09:49 AM

honestly not sure. coolant level doesn't drop below min. and I get a leak infront of rear wheel.

embryoguy@mac.com 03-23-2013 09:50 AM

I'm hoping its my coolant tank. cheaper or sho

embryoguy@mac.com 03-23-2013 10:02 AM

also temps never go past the 8 /0 mark

If the pump is dripping, it is only a matter of time until it fails and strands you or kills your engine. Replace it.

Pull the carpet in the trunk and look for stains... Water pump leaks at the front of the engine. Coolent tank leaks into the trunk, or in front pax side rear wheel. Could be a bad cap...

Mark_T 03-23-2013 03:40 PM

Leaving aside that the coolant tank is actually more expensive than the water pump, anyone who says he would rather change a coolant tank than a water pump has obviously never tried to change a coolant tank in one of these cars!

embryoguy@mac.com 03-23-2013 04:29 PM

yr right mark: no clue: I will take all advice tomm and update tomm. I did replace the cap. if it's the water pump than why does coolant level holds at the min mark? I will pull carpet and check. thks for replies

thom4782 03-23-2013 05:58 PM

If the coolant level drops to the minimum and NEVER goes below it, then the tank is the most likely source of the leak and the crack is at the minimum level.

embryoguy@mac.com 03-23-2013 07:10 PM

Tom, that's what I'm thinking: ill check trunk carpet in morning : thks for thoughts

Mark_T 03-23-2013 08:09 PM

If it's the coolant tank, this should help:
Replace Coolant Reservoir

The job is a real bear. Have some good hose pics, and the cable operated clamp tool is well worth the money.

sorry for delayed response. finally got time to pull the carpet back. pools of coolant and wet carpet in the trunk. just as you guys suspected. atleast now i know the problem. :) thanks so much. now just have to decide if i can do it myself or pay to get it done :(

embryoguy@mac.com 03-30-2013 10:55 AM

still odd though that it does not drain , coolant level stays at minimum level?

embryoguy@mac.com 03-30-2013 11:47 AM

update. tried to trace leak, appears to have condensation on trunk lid and coolant around cap area. also leak seems to run down side. maybe leak higher up on tank? maybe thats why it seems to stop at the minimum? thanks for your thoughts

Had a similar problem with my car the first time it went on track, it was the tank leaking down to the wheelwell. And it only leaked when it was hot, tank expanded some and exposed the crack which I could never see until it was out of the car. Plan on an entire afternoon to change it out. Was not fun.

You need a new tank, period.

embryoguy@mac.com 03-30-2013 08:26 PM

yes your prob right Jeff.

i pulled carpet and took a 45 min drive. not a drip. ! im thinking i overfilled it? but its at minimum. when i topped it off it seemed to expand . but after a good drive, not a drip. i have a feeling if i top off the coolant, it ll leak again.
