Oil separator making noise on ignition

I hear a noise from the oil separator as soon as I switch the ignition on. Sounds like a fluorescent ballast ready to blow up. Is this normal or I should change it. Thaks in advance!
Edit: I have a Boxster 99 2.5l

You are probably hearing the air injection system, which injects air into the exhaust to lessen emissions on start up. The AOS does not make any noise, even in failure mode.
