The problem earlier with metal impeller water pumps was quality control and shoddy manufacturing. From my understanding, DeutscheParts on ebay was selling the water pumps. Mind you, these were no-name generic water pumps made in China that had documented problems of them breaking only after 3,000 miles!

Heiko is going with Geba, a name brand and renowned parts manufacturer, which has to pass TUV standards. I would not paint all the metal impeller pumps with the same brush. One is made by an auto parts company with years of experience, one is made by who knows who? I would feel confident enough with a Geba pump that I would be fine with one inside my engine. The potential of metal to metal contact can raise concern, but with stricter manufacturing tolerances, and higher quality materials, I think the issue of the pump destroying components should not manifest itself during it's service life.

The water pump impeller rides on a bearing pulled by uneven forces.

All rotating parts wear.

All failures occur somewhere on a bell curve which means yours could be the first or last.

Metal to metal, the stronger one wins.

Some things made in Germany are well made. Today my wife is really POed at the expensive German iron that just failed after less than 2 years.

When it fails, it will usually fail just out of warranty. Murphy will get you.

Experience quantity one mean little in predicting performance in quantity. (Hear that before Jake?)

What is a pumps service life? Why should you need to even replace the original?

WOW if that spec on the electric is true the stock pump is 35gal/hr and the electric is rated at 3000Gal/hr (50Gal/min).... can that be right?

Haha. Wow is right! I didnt even notice the units there... yeah, that changes things a bit. lol. I can tell you all the electric pumps for the big V8's are on average 25-35 gal/min.

I have to assume its gpm...

Anyway, thats way I wanted the GEBA rep's email. Get a verification of their designed flows so I could size the stand alone pump accordingly.

BTW, speaking of electric pumps, my new electric PS pump should be here on Thursday!

NFW that a 35gph would provide adequate cooling. Those are fuel pump type numbers, not water pump numbers.

That's what I was thinking too. I went and looked at fuel pump flows just to verify that hunch... anyway, as for water pumps, I'm guessing the flow rates designed to cool an engine twice the size of ours putting out 2-3 times the power should be adequate to cool a little v6 despite being crammed into a little shoe box behind the seats with no appreciable airflow to speak of.

And I don't have to worry about it ever turning into a "milling machine" or confetti cannon!

Update on this old thread.... Well I had one of these GEBA pumps not fit into the block on Saturday!!! First I thought it was the gasket, but the pump alignment pins were actually 1.5mm too close together... I'd say Q.C. needs new calipers or some new glasses... Used a new LASO pump with the original plastic impeller and fit perfect!
