oil light flashing but no leak and level normal

Odd question, I think...

I'm getting a recurrent flash of the oil light. It usually happens when I'm slowing down from interstate speed.

Oil level is normal. No leak that I can see. Just had the RMS / clutch replaced. IMS was fine. No smoke from exhaust... she's running great.

Is this something anyone has seen? Another boxster quirk?

It's likely the oil pressure sender unit, but don't assume that's the case. Take out the oil pressure relief valve and check for obvious clogging or failure. Once you've rules out the OPRV, then get an external oil pressure gauge and test the pressure. If the pressure is good, then I would change out the pressure sending unit.

I wouldn't drive until the checks are done.

Not driving it isn't much of an option... Unfortunately I'm not a mechanic. Where can I find info on checking the OPRV? Is it something a novice can do?

I have a spare oil sender if you want. Takes 10 minutes to replace.

How could they tell the IMSB was fine without removing it?

This is the same behaviour as in the old mans Jaguar Mk2
Slowing down from highway causes the oil lamp to light up for a while, this is due to worn engine bearings and an old pump. In case of a Boxster it is most likely the sender, but before you know I would not recommend to drive a single second with a flashing oil pressure light, does not take long for a total disaster to happen if it is actually bad

Thanks for all the great input. Like I said above, this is my everyday driver and not using her isn't much of an option. I kept her off the interstate today to and from work... no oil light.

Called my mechanic... they'll be taking a look at her this Saturday morning. Till then I'll keep her off the interstate seeing as slowing down from 70 + mph is about the only time the light came on.

After shop checked system top to bottom, found a lose wire on oil pressure sensor. $0.00! They said if the light comes back (stopped flashing after fix) they can replace the sensor for about $15.00

Whew!
