how do i check error codes?

I want to buy the mechanism so I can check error codes for my 2000 S. What should I get please?

You can buy a code reader which will get one subset of the codes (the most common engine related) (see Actron as a brand many use), a Durametric which requires a Windows capable Portable PC which will do more but none of them will do as much as the computers the dealers have (PST2, PIWIS).

The question really gets to be what do you wand to spend.
1. Durametrics gives the most information for about $279 - $318
2. I use Dyno scan also a PC based system about 10 to 20 % less data $175
3. Hand scanners start from $49 you'll need a repair book to give code definitions for most of those. They increase in value with lines of displayed data and definitions of codes to up to and some over $200.
4. Auto Zone will read and reset code for free.

Though durametrics does a ton for the Porsche, I just bought a simple $45 reader off Amazon. Something that reads/erases. This way it works in everything. Used it for my Porsche, my 2 BMWs, back when I had my Evos, helped out buddies at work, etc.... Well worth the money.

X-VCI Porsche piwis1 is only for Porsche, has more function: Diagnosis + Programming + key copier.
But it is also more expensive. About$1100.
