Buyng a boxster with fire damage?
 

Hi!

I am thinking of buying a '98 porsche Boxster with interior fire-damage. I was wandering if anyone could help me getting a detailed assembly partsmap on the internet. And/or does anyone know what kind of repairs I should be expecting seeing the damage on the pictures below. Is the A/C located in this area? The seats, the dash-frame and the doorpanels are still there. Thanking you in advance!

It's going to cost you a small fortune to rebuild the interior. Make sure you know what you're getting yourself into before you proceed with the sale, and discount the purchase price accordingly.

Not only is smoking bad for your health...but also the interior of a Porsche!

Your best bet would be to find one in a salvage yard in your area. I would then try to make a deal on the entire interior. If you were to buy it all new piece by piece it would cost way to much.

You would also be able to pick up the interior that you like the most out of multilple cars. Do not forget that the 996 and 986 are the same.

The A/C controls are in the dash, but the compressor is in the front trunk just in front of the windshield and the condensors are in the front bumper.

I'm with JP-s-in st. louis. You can look in Panorama and/or Excellence magazines for the companies that salvage only Porsches. It's still going to be a small fortune since your list will be something like this:

Complete dash
Stereo
Speakers
Climate Controls
A/C-heating ducts
Complete wiring
Fuse/Relay box with relays/fuses
Steering wheel
Airbag system
Alarm module
Seats
Carpets
Firewall insulation cover
Complete top
Center console and all controls
Windshield
Door insides and all controls
Labor, labor, labor, labor.....or a few months of time.

If it's over $5K, I wouldn't bother. It's like building a house where you start off with one price and by the time it's done it costs you 1.5-2 times as much.

This Boxster that you are buying, what type of title does it have?

If Salvage title, proceed to move away very quickly.

To start with, the car has not a salvage title. They are asking about 11k (euro, yeah I live in Europe) this is about 11k $. (for an intact one they ask here about 18 k)

I forgot to say that the top is unharmed.

The biggest thing that I am concerned about the possibility that the equipment is shortened(if I say this correct). Even engineparts could be harmed? Secondly, I heard that wiring harnesses are very expensive(about 2k for a used one). Is there anything else that is very very expensive to replace in this area (say under the dashboard)? Going to a junkyard is a good idea! Or via ebay? Again, thanks for all your help!

As a Porsche dealer (used) it is my professional opinion to stay away. Project cars almost always go very badly indeed.

I just bought the car!! Till now I am happy with it. Since I am a student, I have a lot of time to fix the things myself. Especially the wiring harness I am concerned about. What kind of workshop manual should I use? I will keep you up to date with the progression of my project. Thanks again for your opinions!

a friend of mine had is 2001 boxster s going on fire, it was not too bad (mainly interior, the battery it seem went awol) and the insurance covered it but porsche ireland bought the car from him (he got a gorgeous purplelly silver brand new one instead with grey hood) and fixed it for resale, i would be very sceptical to buy a car like that personally :eek: !

My suggestion is to find a totaled out wreck that has a good interior.
Looking at the pics I see some things that are going to cost a lot.
