99 vs 98 Boxster engine reliability

Just wondering as to which Boxster engine has better reliability: 98 or 99?

I would think that the 2000 2.7 trumps them both but ...

They both should have a dual row ims bearing

I wasn't trying to be a smartass, I just don't think tha there is a decernible difference between the two statistically...

By this time, the care and feeding of the engine probably matters lots more than the manufacturing date of the engine. We are talking 14-15 years old at this point.

there were changes - didn't the 5-speed transmission change from 98 to 99?

True, yes ....but I am viewing from a particular angle: low mileage over those years and wham she's whistling around a track.

Had the Bentley book handy, no mention of 5 speed transmission change from '98-'99 for what that is worth. There was a change highlighted in 2000 to go with the larger engine displacement (2.5 - 2.7).

you're right, changed on 2000.

No difference.

go to the Auto Atlanta online parts catalogue and scroll though the engine section; it shows when all the parts updated. for example, 99 has improved chain tensioners, chain adjusters and ims shaft. improved oil pump, improved hose clamps! etc.

Good thought, yes I didn't think about updated cam drive parts!
