Whining sound???

I have a 2000 boxster s and am getting a whining sound at startup and it sounds like it's coming maybe from a fan and after 30 seconds or so it shuts off and the sound with it... Any IDEAS? and is this bad as far as I know it leaks no oil and a puff of smoke every once in a while I do know thonit doesn't like to be not started for a week as its quite loud at first when I haven't started it up.

The whining sound is your secondary air injection pump, this is normal. The secondary air injection system is used to reduce air pollution. The pump comes on at start-up and pushes air into the exhaust to help continue burning unburnt fuel. It shuts-down after ~90 seconds.

The puff of smoke is also fine.

Do you think the bearing in the fan is going bad? As I don't recall the whining sound when I first bought the car
