Tiptronic Emergency Run - again

Hi, I asked the question some weeks ago but never really got to the bottom of my problem.

Tip emerg run comes on at random intervals. Today, drove the car for about 30 mins, varying between highway and back roads and let the car sit for 20 mins or so. I turned it around and let sit for another few mins. Tip emerg run come on twice just after I restarted it. It came on a minute or so later.

This last happened on 24th Dec - twice - but not since.

I first saw this about 6mths ago, changed the xmsn fluid and my indy used the durametric. Since then he has looked 3 times with the durametric but each time there have been no codes displayed.

There is no apparent drivability issues - it performs well in both auto and "manual".

I live in Dubai, so still a pleasanter 25deg C during the day and 17 deg at night.

Anybody any thoughts - I do not really want to drop the xmsn to investigate. This is an 02 Base 2.7 with 153k Km, so not a valuable car but one that still has some life in yet. Its not a DD but does get used when I can.

Thanks for looking, Simon

A question is how well a Durametric of revision x compares to a PST2 or PIWIS when diagnosing TIP transmission faults? Have access to any ZF transmission shops there?

There is an independant specialist in Dubai with an impressive facility with many high end vehicles in the lot which initially gave me confidence. However, they suggested they needed to spend 2 hours to "calibrate" the gearbox then do a road test. I have looked many times at varous forums and never come across this "calibration". They needed to book the car in as it was close to closing and the weekend so I left.

I then took to Dubai Porsche - with 40 mins to goto the weekend they brought the car in and hooked uo to the diagnostics.

Codes 70 - solenoid valve and 30 (or 30 something) gearbox temperature.

He suggested to delve into the box for an inspection for approx 4-5 hours labour and replace the fliud. The fluid was replaced just 5k ago so he suggested it could be saved and reused (nice approach).

His initial thoughts are the clutch pack are worn and towards the end of life. A replacement tip from porsche is out of reach cost wise.

Not sure what to do now - car has 156k Km. Drives really well, there is no physical indication of a tip failure, shifts smooth, responsive, operates from the wheel switched on demand etc.

Anybody any thoughts?

Thanks

Simon

The Durametric Pro system is pretty good with Tip diagnostics, but it cannot do all the coding that a PIWIS unit can,

DTC 70 or P0740 = Solenoid valve, torque converter clutch. Open circuit/short to ground.

1. Check ATF level. Erase the code and take for a test drive.
2. Re-check for fault codes.
3. If the fault recurs after the test drive and no other faults are stored, the following fault possibilities can be present:
-Electrical activation of pressure regulator 4 not OK (diagnostic trouble codes 83 and 55 present?).
-Mechanical defect in pressure regulator 4.
-ATF supply to the torque converter clutch not OK.
-Converter defective.
