AOS Replaced, now cannot shift beyond 2nd
Have a 02 Boxster S. Today I had my AOS replaced by a local generic auto mechanic, I provided part etc.
It is an experienced shop but not specific to Porsches. When I picked up the car I quickly realized I could engage reverse, first and second but could not physically move the shifter to a position such that could engage third through sixth. :ah: Tech put the car on lift and fiddled with shift linkage. We could then get all gears but after a short distance the problem reappeared. They have the car tonight and my hope is this is a simple issue resolved tomorrow morning, however I know the AOS is in a position that is in the proximity of where the shift linkages connect to the tranny. So clearly they messed something up when AOS was replaced. Any ideas as to what transpired? Thanks in advance, Joe in Atlanta |
The shifter cable has a ridicules locking tab. If it's not fitted properly, the cable will jump out of its support, and you will loose gears.
I truly hope and ( believe ) that's your issue. Couple of minutes with consternation, he will get it right. |
What Meir said is very true. This happened to me when I was driving back from a car meet with Homeboy981 and I had the exact symptoms as described. Remarkably, I drove and started out off in 4th gear, back to a garage to pop the cable tab in.

This is what it looks like with the clips locked in place. Zip ties are there to keep them from popping out.

I have zip ties on mine too. It's a crappy design.

Always use new clips.

Ya they messed it up. I used zips also. After I did my transmission and IMS I had one pop off and only had 2nd, 4th, and 6th gear to drive home in...no problem though fixed it in minutes.

Does this get too hot for zip ties?
Anyone melted the zip tie? Is safety wire better to use? |
I never reuse these as they are easily damaged when removing. I have never had an issue when using new ones.
