997 wheels on a 987

Any opinions on whether a 997 18" wheels will fit a 987 w/o spacers? The rears are 10" with an offset of 58mm
Thanks for any hep.

MikenOH, your current rears (assuming the 18 inch Boxster Wheel) are 9" with an offset of 43. The 19' wheels on the Boxster are 9.5" with a 46 off-set.

Yep, but these are off a 997--

with a different width and offset. My dealer says no problem but there is a clearance reduction of 25mm on the inside of the wheel, with half coming from the extra wheel and half from the offset . Seems like a lot to me.
Before I plunk down $2K on a set of wheels I'd like to hear something more than " should work".

MikenOH, what about all of that extra stress on the wheel bearings with the greater off-set? Is that good??

I really doubt that the extra offset would be detrimental to your wheel bearings. I do know that the Gemballa Competition's that I have on my 986 will fit the non-wide body 996 perfectly. I have 18x8.5's in front and 18x10's in the rear with basically the same offset that you described earlier. I have had no wheel bearing issues in the 10k miles that I've driven since putting the Gemballas on. I did have a bad rear wheel bearing, but that was with the stock wheels.

I would drop by the dealership and ask them to bolt a front and rear wheel on your 987. I know that my local dealer would do this for me, yours may not. I have been toying with the idea of buying a newer 996 Cab in a few years and plan on keeping the Gemballas when I do.

I have a like new (200 miles) set of 19" Carrera S rims for sale if you are interested. 8" front and 9.5 rear, 57 and 46 offsets.

Chris: I'd love to have those wheels..

on the new car but they are a bit too expensive at this point. thanks for the offer.
BTW, which wheels are you switching to?

Chris C Atlanta 11-10-2005 08:08 PM

Miken--I have 19" Champion wheels...

The price is now 1900 rims only. Good luck!

Chris

Chris--I'm still considering them--

IIRC, you kept your tires, right?
TireRack has some Goodyear F1-G3's for around $200/tire + shipping in the 19" sizes;making the whole package around $3K. Hmmm..

Miken--you will love these rims! I still see them on the 987 and wonder how I started down this slippery (mod) slope.

If you're serious--$1875 shipped to your door. (Have some pesky real estate taxes due next week!)

Let me know if you want to see additional pics.
