Horn wire schematic/location
 

Hi Folks,

I have an intermittent horn malfunction. Sometimes it works, sometimes not... Lately it's been out of service. Can anyone tell me where it is; how it is wired and what might be the likely issue?

It's probably the horn unit itself... but check your battery voltage as well. If it's too low i've seen a few not work. The horn is behind the front bumper to the inside of the rad (right side)... just plug a v-meter into the connector off the back of the horn and see if you get 12V when someone pushes on the horn in the car. It's a bit of a pain to get at as you pretty much have to pull the front bumper skirt... Could also be the relay going.... Horn cont... This is weird
 

So, I'd not gotten around to tearing the bumper off yet, but today I inadvertently bumped the horn getting into the car. My discovery? My horn works as long as the key is in the off position. What's weirder is that if I hold the horn down while turning the key on, I can some get the horn to work with the car running for about 5 or 10 minutes, after that it fails again and only works with the ignition off.

Anyone have an idea of what's causing this? Ignition switch on its way out?

The ignition switch can be a pain in the you know what and are nutorious for causing issues before they fail completely... luckily only 25 bux at Audi/VW (its a VW part#). I havent seen it make the horn fail but your guess is as good as mine. 4A0 905 849 B is the Audi/VW part. For the price and amount of effort it takes to replace its a quick way to narrow it down.
