quaife differential
Hi, I just found out that you could swap the factory differential on the 986 with one made by quaife. this is supposed to work with some sort of gears instead of paddles and it's meant to give you more traction.
My mechanic told me that since I dont use mine on the track, it will be useless on the road and might even be a burden to live with. The Quaife website says that it is suitable for road use. Any suggestions about apgraded diffs? |
There's paddles in the transmission?
Good to know if the car ever ends up in the lake. :p Since the differential is not external but inside the transmission case I guess you have to drop the tranny to install the upgraded diff. What benefit does it provide to traction? limited slip? |
I would not spend the money unless you are going to track it and or increase your horsepower considerably. the Boxster handles the torque and hp quite nicely now without posi traction so if you have too much money burning a hole in your pocket send it to me. lol

I wish I had it for AX, as I do a lot of peg leg spinning coming out of corners, but there's a lot of other things I want to do first for the money. I see no benefit to running this on the street.
Quaife ATB Differential - Lightning Motorsports - Made with bits of real lightning, so you know it's good ! Probably another grand for install |

Sounds like a Torsen or Torque-biasing Diff. I've got the Guard Torque-biasing diff in my car and it made a significant difference for autocrossing. Be warned, installing a diff is not a shade-tree DIY. The stock axle flanges must be cut and machined to fit the new diff. The diff alone was about $1500; total cost to rebuild my transaxle including new synchros and the 2nd gear pop-out fix was $4500. Removing the trans and reinstalling it isn't too hard, so that can be DIY. |
Im not sure eactly how it works, i just read what's on the site: Quaife Engineering
I dont intend to track my car, I just thought it will be an easy upgrage, but from what you guys are saying, it doesnt seem to be the case! I'd rather spend money elsewhere! |
