Weird Sucking Noise

I get a strange, random sucking noise which appears to be coming from the passenger side inlet on my '01 Boxster. It is not related to engine speed, acceleration load, etc. It happens maybe 5 or 6 times during a 30 minute run and lasts about 3 - 5 seconds.

Any ideas?

OMG... it's all I can do to leave this one alone.. weird sucking noise from the passenger side that only lasts about 5 seconds, eh? My sides are starting to hurt....

Sorry dude (snicker) I don't know what that could be (hehe) I just had to post though (snork) Maybe someone else can help you. (guffaw) oh dear... someone, please help this guy. I have tears steaming down my face....

You sure it's not sucking from the oil cap? If so, could be an AOS problem.

Keep in mind that the louvers on the passenger side are an outlet, not an inlet.

Ummm. It's not entirely relevant to the discussion but I'm not sure that this is true. I believe the passenger side louvered hole is the inlet for the engine air clearing / cooling fan. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's your air pump. It happens at start up right

Okay. You're wrong. The driver's side is an inlet and the passenger's side is an outlet.

It is most likely the engine compartment fan. This fan will start up and stop somewhat randomly to cool the mostly enclosed engine compartment. Air is exhausted through the passenger side vent.

You live and learn. I removed my fan assembly in a weight saving exercise before i ever ran the car but looking at it I always assumed it sucked in and blew through to the bottom. But I guess it does make sense that it would suck the hot air off the top of the motor.

Ummm.. on my 987 the fan sucks IN. I checked it last time this debate came up.
