Temperature Guage Problem
 

Hello all I'm new to the forum, my 2000 986 2.7 has recently developed a problem with the temperature gauge the needle dose not move at all the car is not over heating the coolant level is fine and there are no fault lights on the dash ! any ideas you input would be much appreciate.

If the car is operating and running normal, it's likely either the gauge itself, a broken or otherwise compromised wire or the pickup sensor.

Thankyou for the response . Where would the pickup be located ? i'll try fitting a new one if that dosn't work then i'll try a new gauge .

That's an excellent question, to be a board buddy I retrieved my Bentley manual to check for you. Section 19-2 shows the entire cooling system and I see no pickup. I wonder if the thermostat includes the sender? Doesn't look like it does. Maybe someone else will chine in here, in the meantime I'll keep combing the book and jump back in if I find it for you.

found it! 24-8 in Bentley book at coolant manifold, left front engine near cylinder 4 there is a big ass hose right next to it, must be done from underneath car

As long as you are going to check it take it apart, check for corrosion, lubricate the connection with pb blaster or equivalent. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then, I fixed the Fiat alternator using the method described above. good luck!

I know this is not much help but, looking at the wiring diagram tells me that the temperature sensor is in the engine bay with four wires attached. Assuming your car is a 97-99 the wires are brown/orange, blue/red, blue/white & brown/pink. My guess is that it is plugged into the block itself.

Sorry I can't be more specific. I must have disconnected once or twice but I just don't remember.

What I transcribed was direct from the manual, including the underneath the car comment, not sure if it can be done other ways.

HAHA ! problem solved thankyou guys, the wire to the sensor was loose I love those sort of repairs ! :)

So for my information where was the sensor?

Coolant temp sensor is on the coolant manifold side behind the drivers seat. Easy to replace thru the behind the seat access panel, although you need to catch escaping coolant while the sensor is out. Photohttp://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1347649150.jpg

its a bit tight to get to from under the car but i only had to push the wires back on I think if I have to change it at somepoint then BYprodriver's advice would be the way to go there is no way without taking all the bottom pannels off the car of getting to it easly cheers guys.
