Since you are locked in at TDC, you stated you removed two chain tensioners...did you leave the IMS chain tensioner in place? Leaving this installed will still apply force to your cam chain and can cause the offset you are seeing. This is accessed behind the drivers seat and behind the AC.

IMO...you should remove that and see if this relieves what you are seeing. It will also ease installation of the IMS bracket when you go to button her up. Good luck...

Can this be removed even with the engine in the car? After all this trouble, I am wishing I'd dropped it altogether. (Actually wishing I'd left the engine well enough alone!!)

It was a squeal that was most noticeable when revving up from idle (loading the tensioners). When the chain tensioners were pulled, they were completely worn through.

Eric is right you still have a chain load on the ims. Replace the tensioners and you might just save her.

There is a lot of helpful information here... However you did see fresh rub marks on the old flywheel and engine case. Are you sure the fly wheel is on correctly and flush with main shaft? Any possibility the flywheel is not lined up with the guide pin? Just a thought...

no 2000boxster986, the flywheel was definitely on correctly -- I think the marks I saw were just from installation.

I have a brand new one in now and the squeak is still present.
