Can this be removed even with the engine in the car? After all this trouble, I am wishing I'd dropped it altogether. (Actually wishing I'd left the engine well enough alone!!)

There is a lot of helpful information here... However you did see fresh rub marks on the old flywheel and engine case. Are you sure the fly wheel is on correctly and flush with main shaft? Any possibility the flywheel is not lined up with the guide pin? Just a thought... |
no 2000boxster986, the flywheel was definitely on correctly -- I think the marks I saw were just from installation.
I have a brand new one in now and the squeak is still present. |
