Transmission Question

Today I was removing the axles from my transmission when I noticed something. I put my car into gear but the axles still move, I thought they were supposed to stay in place? Anyways, I got the axles off by engaging the parking brake but I am curious as to whether the axles should move while the car is in gear because I have often parked my car on hills just by placing it in gear sans parking brake. I didn't disconnect the shift cables, and I have shifted just fine with the short shift kit installed, so those are out of question.

Edit: Learned something about transmissions. I assumed the axle moved in the same direction, and locked in place once you put it in gear.
