drone

Can someone explain the "drone" noise to me? I see posts all the time but what is this sound??

Joel-Box-ster 06-11-2012 09:49 AM

A low frequency sound usually from exhaust..

I've heard that drone noise is a very faint propeller noise, followed very quickly by a very loud bomb explosion. Sorry, couldn't resist.

A drone exists only to mate with the Queen Bee - after which he quickly dies . Hmm... sounds like metaphor for marriage !

It's that sound your significant other is always making but you can't remember exactly what it sounded like after you heard it.

By any chance do you still have the box your car came in?

I just bought a 02 S 6 speed with 50K on it about 3 weeks ago. I get a low freq harmonic when off the throttle as the RPMs fall through about 2800; it's gone by 2500 and only off throttle. I don't know what causes it, but I believe this is what people may be referring to when they mention drone...

The "drone" is actually a resonance in the exhaust system. Depending on the model it seems to occur between 2500-3000 rpm. My 2000S is very bad in the 2600-2800 rpm range and it is totally gone by 3000rpm. Hope this helps....

Ya gotta have a thick skin and a good sense of humor in here. We try and maintain a ratio of at least six smart-ass answers for every serious one.

Welcome to the forum!

The reason for all of the sarcasm is because this question has been raised numerous times in the past . Moreover, lots of subjectivity comes into play when people are asked to define their version of what drone is ? My thoughts are that any well designed aftermarket cat back will result in a a vast improvement in both sound and performance over the oem "boat anchor " of an exhaust . If not from the standpoint of weight reduction alone.
