What type of oil?
 

What type of oil should I add to my 2000 Boxster? The oil level indicator is on the last notch above the minimum line so I thought I should add some. The manual says for 50 degrees or higher, Mineral 15 W-40, 20 W-50, or 20 W-40 or Synthetic 10 W-40, 15 W-40 or 15 W-50. For just everyday driving, which should I use?

When I do add, do I pour the whole bottle into the oil filler?

Use Synthetic Oil ONLY (Mobil 1- recommended)- since you are in in FLA, id go for either 10-40 or 15-50w...refer to your owners manual on properly adding oil...since you are one notch above the min. id add a 1/4 quarter at a time to it , then re-measure-- add if necessary

The oil filler cap is in the trunk right behind the passenger seat. You add the oil there. Of course, if you got your oil level from the actual dipstick then you already know where this is... but if you're going from the dash indicator then the above may actually be of help ;)

If I "bare" with you my wife is really going to be upset. ROFL (Sorry, I just couldn't resist.)

When you add the 1/4 of a bottle of synthetic at a time like spine911 said, give it about 5 minutes to drain all the way down to the pan before you re-check the level and add more. Synthetic oil is made to stay put and keep things lubed longer so it takes a bit for it to get through the curves in the filling system.

Factory fill is Mobil 1 0W-40 and that is what most dealers will use when servicing car. Good stuff.

Mobil 1 15W-50 is also great for summer driving where you are but it will hurt your MPG just a tad.

Also, Shell Rotella Fully Synthetic 5W-40 is superb also and much cheaper than M1. Wally World sells this for under $3.50 per quart.

Shell Rotella T Full Synth, this is what i use for my MB Diesel....is it really compatible with Porsche Engines??

Yes, the Fully Syn is a fine oil. It is rated as a diesel oil but many fine oils are (Like M1 15W-50).

However, it is more than fine to run in your Porsche.

I run it in my 1999 Yamaha RoadStar without any trouble at all. I have over 31,000 miles on it!

The roadstar is a nice ride!!!!!!

You should never use car oil in a motor cycle. It normaly dose not have the EP(extream pressure addative) or enoguh of it prehaps. Resone is the transmission and the wet clutch used in the Jap bikes need it. The clutch will slip and require replaceing early.
Grant it I have not had a back in nearly 10 years.

Double check, but I'm sure it is still the case.

This myth has been debunked a number of times, most recently in a two issue test done by Motorcycle magazine two years ago.

High qaulity Synthetic Auto oil is actually superior to many so called MC oils out there.

That maybe so if it is synthetic I do seem to recall that Moblile 1 has the EP addative.
Though it is not a myth. I personaly know a couple of people that it happend to. The shop told one of them that that was the cause.
They where not running Synthetic either just regualr car motor oil.
Funny thing is I also read this in a motorcycle magazine about 15 years ago.
