986 ticking in first gear from 1-3k rpm
 

Hi,

Hope someone can diagnose this problem I've been having recently. There is a ticking coming from the rear of my boxster when i accelerate in first gear from about 1000-3000rpm the best I can liken it to is the sound of having a playing card stuck in the spokes of a bicycle rim. The sound is not present if I just rev my engine when not in gear, or if I take off from second gear. Only in first gear..

anyone have any ideas or have experienced something similar?

1) If you roll down a hill in neutral is the sound still there?

2) There could be a chip on the 1st drive gear.

3) Check to see if there is any damage to your driveshaft rubber boots - if there's a tear and water / debris got in, the bearing(s) could be on the way out.....

Of course, it could be something simple like a stone embedded in your tyre or brake disc, but if it only happens in 1st gear probably not......

Does the noise speed raise and fall with RPM? I'll guess noisy valve.
