fabspeed

So my porsche dealer says he would never put something on my car he would be embarrased about when I asked him about a fabspeed exhaust. Are they really that bad?

I think they look good and sound good. Your dealer is just trying to shame you into buying from them

I was under the impression that after market exhausts can actually cost you horsepower in a 986.

fivepointnine 05-20-2012 07:51 PM

my last dealer invoice had a note at the bottom that said "aftermarket exhaust installed" right next to saying a underbody plastic panel had a crack in it lol

The arrival of the altruistic Porsche dealer, one of the seven signs of the apocalypse.

ProjectM96 05-21-2012 05:05 AM

Some people believe in leaving them stock and some believe in increasing sound and performance.

Interesting as my dealer not only installed but also sold me my Fabspeed system (which sounds awesome BTW). Yours likely has a relationship w/ another aftermkt exhaust mfg or doesn't like to sell anything other than Porsche parts...

OLD wifes tale. I suppose if you put the wrong system on it could, by wrong I mean something with smaller pipes or restrictors in the pipes.(seen that)

My garden hose is less restrictive than the stock system. :p Dynos don't lie, people do.;)

I am very pleased with my Fabspeed full system with headers, and no secondary cats. The butt dyno says that the power is up a bit, but nothing huge. The sound above 3000 RPM is fantastic, and not to loud IMO, but I wish it was just a bit quieter at idle to about 3000 RPM. A minor complaint, as it's best to keep it above 3000 anyway.

The only fitment complaints I had were:

1- The front O2 sensor restraint can't be bolted in place in the stock location. This is a minor annoayance, as the wire really is restricted in length, and cannot flop around anyway, so you really don't need the bolted restraint.

2- The trailing arm eccentric bolt that is used to adjust toe cannot be removed from the suspension due to clearance with the exhaust expansion joint in front of the bolt. No big deal, as the frequency of removing this bolt is pretty rare, and the exhaust can just be loosened up if needed for removing this bolt.

3- It's almost impossible to get the exhaust outlets to line up perfectly. It seems that one always want's to hang down a bit more than the other one.

thanks for the replys everyone. Yeah, the dealer told me about a company called FVD that they use. And of course those systems are HUGE money. I think you may be right that he only wants to sell me on who he is in bed with. Everything I have heard and seen on fabspeed looks and sounds great. Not sure what I will do, but really can not stand the silence of my car!

Any well designed aftermarket cat back will result in a a vast improvement in sound and performance over the oem "boat anchor " of an exhaust that your vehicle currently has on it. If not from the standpoint of weight reduction alone. Both Fabspeed and FVD are highly regarded brands- albeit expensive ones. However, even the infamous $300 "Charlie Chan" muffler that many members have acquired from eBay would be an improvement over the oem exhaust .

Called Fabspeed and found a local company that does installs for them. He has one in stock...and charges about $200 for install. Company is Technical Dimensions. Seems to be a Porsche and Audi specialist. Talked to the owner for about 45 minutes and he is very enthused about these cars and knows them in and out. Is $200 a good price? I am not a wrencher.

Burg Boxster 05-23-2012 04:49 AM

it's a fair price for install...especially since you're not a wrencher.

Go for it and enjoy the new sound system :)

fivepointnine 05-23-2012 05:48 AM

in a few months I am either getting a fabspeed race or a Lucas race system for my 02 'S.......not a daily driver lol
