Another Wheel Question

I have a chance to purchase a set of 2006 Boxster S Wheels they are 8x18 57 offset front, 9X18 43 offset rear, my wheels are 7.5x18 50 offset front, 9x18 52 offset rear. What do I need to do to make these wheels fit my 2001 Boxster S? Thanks

Johnny Danger 02-22-2012 02:32 PM

The short answer is that they will fit fine. The fronts will be positioned slightly inward . However, the rears will be positioned a bit further out toward the fender . Depending how aggressive you want your "stance" to be, spacers can be added to augment this effect.

Thank You very much, they're a lot smarter guys on here than me.

what about some
18x 8.5 51mm
18x10 63mm

What would I need to make them fit?

Thank you

Hi!

You need 23mm spacers for the rear wheels, so they will fit.

I'm going to order them now.

Also you can order 7mm spacers for front!

Then you become this:

18x 8.5 51mm plus 7mm spacer = offset 46
18x10 63mm plus 23mm spacer = offset 40

This configuration should be perfect, but keep in mind, to use only 225/40 in front and 265/35 for rear.

Or you could use the 987 sizes of 235/40 and 265/40.

Sorry, but these sizes are not for the 986 Boxster !

OK, you have me confused. You recently posted in another thread that 18x11 wheels fit on a 986???

The sizes I mentioned may not be OEM fitment to a 986, but by that logic you shouldn't use wheels from a 987 either.

Yes, thatīs right! 11 x 18 will fit on 986, but thereīs a lot of modifications to do and only with 265/35 possible.

For the 986, you can not use the 987 tire sizes, their not compatible.

As long as the wheels are hub centric (i.e. 71.6 center bore - which 986/987 wheels both are), then they're perfectly interchangeable . However, one has to carefully calculate how the difference in width and offset will effect the overall fitment between the two .
In the past, I've gone on record several times indicating that 10 inch wheel is about the widest that will properly fit on a 986 boxster .

Sorry Johnny, I meant I was confused by Spyder's comments, I know the 986/987 wheels interchange, it's done all the time (and that the O/S has to be correct).

The 987 sizes work fine, it's been done. They will be a touch taller, but not enough to cause a problem. Some may argue they fill out the wheel well a bit better.

I think, itīs everyones personal taste, which widths he use... for my kind of taste, 10,0 or 10,5 was not enough. My new wheels are become the widths in front 9,0 and rear 11,0 again.

As you probably know, it's the difference in tire size that changes the overall circumference between the two. Also, keep in mind that the oem wheels used on the 987 platform vehicles typically have a much higher offset than the 986 . And, depending on one's suspension set-up, this can pose inner clearance problems . Thus, necessitating the need for spacers .

JD is our wheel expert, just don't ask him if 11 inch wheels will fit...he will implode.
