Code Read with Durametric
First of all I think this tool is great. Never user one so I'm very glad that I can now read the faults in the vehicle and diagnose issues. Haven't played around too much with it but here's what I did so far:
- checked the fault codes on all supported features of the car. Pretty comprehensive. Does show you options what you don't have. Parking assist for example which I don't have. - Was able to manually command start and stop of various components, radiator fans, CEL light etc. Good to make sure things are working. - Tried to test the Xenon lamp and issued a error that component was not present. True, I have OEM HID. - Did not reset the codes to see if they are old or still valid. Wish it ave me a date stamp on the error. It did fail me on the readiness which I believe is what you could use to determine if you will pas the DMV inspection. Mine fails miserably. Some other faults are due tomthings that PO did. Replaced stock seats with sport and disconnected harness, did some hot wiring to alarm to do something with the radio etc. But the O2 sensors bother me. I did see the one by cylinder 4-6 was dripping with engine oil. Cleaned it but might have to replace after I change the coil tubes. Below is the work log from the program. More to come later. You did not preform the most important test
Under DME, check for camshaft deviation.
The reading will show you a value between 0 and -8. The most important thing is to see that the value stay steady on idle. The graph will show a strait line. That will confirm that the IMS is in a good shape. If the line go up and down, well... you have a problem. Good luck |

No need to drive it Bala.
Just let it idle and make sure the line stay steady.
This is what our dear friend JFP in PA posted as reply to my question in the same matter. Camshaft position deviation. - Pelican Parts Technical BBS I’m also a new owner, and I’m trying to learn as much as I can from the more experience ones. It is great to have people like JFP and many others that are willing to take their time and share with us their knowledge. Good luck and enjoy you boxster, I know I do. |
After a full day of wrestling with the new top, wanted to have some fun and got back on the code reader. Here are some screen shots. Does it look like my IMS is feeling good at the moment. Can I sleep peacefully for a few days?

Need to get my DMV inspection done. I have the Borla performance exhaust with the stock headers. PO said they would pass. Given these fault codes am I looking at a fail? http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1324609073.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1324609104.jpg |
can't speak for NY / long island, but a "fail" component is a failure on Maryland Emissions requiring it to be resolved and retested.
we have a two-step inspection where the state performs the OBD / emissions inspection every two years and a third party does the safety inspection when you first register the car. |
"Can I sleep peacefully for a few days?"
Nope, you start driving your car! Looks like you're spending all your time wrenching. Today was a beautiful day on Long Island. I even had the top down. Ho, ho, ho...... |
For the emissions: if you have cleared any codes, it will fail untl you drive it for a bit. It also had to be warmed up to operating temp.
|
as for your IMSB
looks solid as a rock.
|
Camshaft deviation looks good but the value of cam 2, 6.3 is out of spec, should be +- 4. Check it again after the car is fully warmed, meaning after being driven for more than 1/2 hour and the radiators have cycled a couple of times. Cam 2 on mine varies between 5.3 and 6.X depending on temp. I'm not too worried about it being slightly out of spec as the car runs fine.

Found the cause for the "Cruise Control readiness light exceeds limit value" error code. The bulb for the CC light in the dash was missing. Taking from another and putting it in not only lit up the light but also cleared the fault.
There are some others that are empty. Is that the how it's supposed to be. I don;t have some options like PSM but about 6-7 are empty. Wondering what I'm missing out on! |
Mine had some empty slots too. My car only has something called the Sport Package, pretty base car. I got a bunch of black/tan bulbs and filled them up to see if I was missing anything too. I had just got the car and was learning a the time. The odometer light was out and the previous owner gave me a discount for that. I think I took back out the ones that didn't light up when the key is first turned. I'll be getting the Durametric at some point too, based on what I read it sounds like I might get codes for each bold I took out and put back in.
|
Even though i have some empty slots the only code i got related to the dash instruments was the CC light. Mine is an S and the window sticker says 'Sport package'. I tried to get a picture of the dash with the descriptions of the lights from a manual but, unfortunately i dont have one and the only ones i can find online is not matching my car layout. Ordered one from Sunset.

Digging up an old thread... this is the only place on the board I've found a mention of the code that I'm seeing on my car:

What's the code you are seeing Paul? Might want to do a full scan and post all the codes.
