Oil consumption and Mobil 1 Black Top

Many of you may know that the early Boxs and 911s came with Mobil 1 15-W50 (redcap) and that was known as "factory fill." Later Mobil developed their 0W-40 (black cap) and that became factory fill.

I know that many have complained about oil consumption in the Boxster engines. My service tech says that 1 qt per 1000 miles is "normal,.

Here is something interesting. I have used redcap in my wife's car for some time. NO oil consumption between changes. Recently, I switched to blackcap and lo and behold, I am using about 1 qt per 1000 miles in her car.

Hmmm, what do you make of this??????????

Of course, here in SOCAL, I can use either due to our climate. This may not be germane for many of you.

Good question! I don't know what to make of it myself, but I too have driven my car about 2300 miles since I bought it used, and no oil consumption either. If 1 quart every 1000 miles is "normal", is no consumption "abnormal"?

I haven't put enough miles on my 2000 Boxster since I've had it to determine oil usage. I am running the 0W-40 and am interested to see what happens. 1 quart per 1000 miles sounds like high consumption to me. Doesn't it sound excessive if one would have to add 15 quarts over the course of a year beween oil changes? This is, of course, if a car was driven 15,000 miles a year and the oil was changed every 15,000 miles.

My thoughts exactly. Wouldn't this obviate the need for an oil change????????????

:D

obviate? I had to look that one up.

I had my 01 boxster its oil change 3,000 miles ago (during its 30,000 service) and I'm still waiting to add some 0W-40. Where is a good place to purchase Mobil1 0W-40? I tried PepBoys, Walmart and Target and though I haven't had to be too serious since the level is good I am thinking of being ready for when I have to add.

We run 15W50 with no oil consumption in 5K miles in the Boxster. I haven't tried the 0W40, but like spgribben007 said, I have not seen it anwhere around here either.

Maybe a special weight you can only get at the dealer? Like the $50/gallon coolant you can't find at an auto shop either?
