98 Boxster will not shift into 5th gear

Has anyone else had this problem?

Say more about this. Any and all conditions or just in certain situations?

Any other gear related issues?

Manual or Tiptronic?

Dude, you didn't give us nearly enough information to help you!

I feel a dealership visit on your horizon. Tool Pants any ideas? It sounds like one of your syncros are f-ed up.

thanks that is not what I was hoping

I agree with Adam. If the other gears are fine and you cannot engage 5th only, I would vote for a bad synchro. If so, try to find a rebuilt tranny and a competent but inexpensive mechanic.

As one who just replaced his 5 speed tranny, I'd have to agree with BruceLee...

Call Salvage yards and ask them if they have one ON PREMISES to sell you, how many miles it has on it, etc.

The reason I say "on premises" is that all the salvage yards are now online together and will be quoting you $$ for the same tranny, located elsewhere. They just drop ship it to you. The actual owner of the tranny will be cheaper.

I paid $1650 + 150 for shipping for mine. It had 40k on it. Paid my mechanic $400 to put it in (6.5 hours). He's a Porsche certified guy that works at a dealership and moonlights for far less $$.

I am having the same problem but with first gear

I am having the same problem but with first gear. Have a 98 box with ~ 72k, 5 speed. It started not wanting to go into first about a month ago, but if you shifted into a different gear first it usually worked. It feels like it is not lining up or is hitting some kind of lockout like the one that keeps you from going straight to reverse from fifth gear.

Does this sound like a synchro problem? Is there any way it could be a cable or linkage that is loose? How would I check this?

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
