Tires gone in 15,000?
I have a 2009 Boxster S. 19 inch Pirelli PZero Tires.
Both rear tires wore through the steel belts within 15,000 miles. Not inside, not outside, but right in the middle of the tire. Outside and inside have lots of tire left. I was told by the dealer that it was "aggressive driving" or overinflation. I have maybe spun the tires once in 12 months, on wet pavement. I have an auto and it is damn hard to spin them. I have watched tire pressure religiously during the life of these tires. I have never added pressure to the tires from the day I bought it (dealership new Oct 2010). They have ranged from 28psi to 38psi (when hot in summer). I have not raced the car. I initially took the dealer's word, but checking Pirelli, these tires were not overinflated. Any ideas? Scott |
poke around the forum a bit and you'll find multiple threads discussing the fact that rear tires typically wear twice as fast as the fronts on our boxsters. And 15.000 mi is not too bad. When you get your new tires, go in for an alignment and confirm it is within factory spec.
+ Actually, I find I get more even wear on my rear tires when i autocross them more regularly and drive in an overall spirited manner most of the time. |

I have been looking around and came to the same conclusion. I guess PS2's may get more milage, but I am not that concerned. I was just afraid that 15,000k meant something was wrong with my car. Since some are getting 10,000k maybe I should drive it harder. :) Scott |
yeah... no, PS2 wont give you any additional miles :D ask me how I know Hehehe.

Get rid of the Pirelli's......Go Michelin and you will be happy!

Or try Hankook Ventus V12s. Half the price of Michelins and quite a good tire.

15K miles is fairly normal for the rears and not surprising in any way. If you tracked the car, 5K miles would be typical from a set of tires.

I've killed them in 8k miles with very little aggressive driving... :confused:

So anyway back to the topic of getting maximum treadwear, it is crucial to use all of the tread by maintaining proper air pressure. If the middle of the tread wears faster than the edges it is caused by over inflation/& or spinning the tires, there is no other way to do it. Factory spec is 36psi @70 degrees, you may need to use 33-34 to get even treadwear. I got 30,000 miles out of my OE michelins & I believe you will get more mileage from Michelins than your Pirelli's. |
BTW, you do need to adjust your tire pressures with the changing seasons. I wouldn't let them get down to 28 Psi.
