What should I do first?
 

Are their any no-brainer, relatively inexpensive mods to improve performance/handling that I should be considering? I just bought a used 2001 986S, entirely stock.

Thanks for the warm welcome. At the moment I'm focused on replacing the stereo (cdr-220), adding rear speakers, and replacing the factory grey top with the GAHH top w/real glass window.

In terms of performance I'm thinking of handling mods and tweaks for a few extra horses. It currently has 17" stock rims and which I'm thinking of upgrading to 18".

I'll post some pics in the "Show and Tell" section...with improvements to follow...

I have my car lowered 1" on H&R Sport Springs, as well as H&R front and rear sway bars. The car rides and handles phenomenally. Soon I will be adding a Racing Dynamics front upper strut bar, but I need to finish the light set-up first (smoked tails, clear headlights, HID's). I have 17's on my car and I am sticking with them. They are the tuner style ones (tons of spokes), and I have some Potenza S-03's on them. I will be powdercoating the rims black soon. As for power...not really too much we can do, but I perforated my airbox for added grunt. I'll be doing an exhaust sooner or later, and if someone makes a replacement for the pathetic Boxster headers, I will be happy to apply them.

Thanks for posting the pics. The car is beautiful! What color is the interior?

I just replaced my original black, plastic-window top with a gray, GAHH glass-window top. I love it. No worries about the plastic cracking, etc.

I also recently added a rear speaker kit, 996 6-channel amp, and a 6-disc changer. Are you planning on adding a new head unit? Amp?

My car is a 2000 Boxster with the standard 17' wheels. I've always liked the S 17" wheels that you have. I recently purchased a used set and am waiting on getting them back from being powder coated.

For handling, I would get a set of 18" factory wheels and a set of quality tires. Drive the car for several months and see if that is how you want it to handle.

If it were me, I would stop there but this is a matter of taste. The S with 18" wheels is among the best handling cars in the world just that way. It may be enough for you.

The stereo upgrades sound great. :)

I would mate the sport headers and cats with a GHL muffler for the ultimate exahust sound and some decent hp gains. The Dansk sport muffler is very close to OE specs and not much louder so I would pass on that.

Short Shifter!! :D

With the 928s, everybody I've talked to who has done it says it's the best upgrade they've ever done once they get used to the short throw. Even guys who have SCs, RMBs and/or intake upgrades like the short shifter best.

See the Vertex Auto ad above. That's a darn good price for a Boxster short shifter.
