Engine Winding Noise???

I went and looked at a tiptronic 99 Boxster locally for sale.In each gear I could hear an engine winding noise. It got louder as I went faster. Is that sort of noise a normal engine noise for the 99 engine or does it mean their is a problem?I didn't think it was very noticable and assumed it was just a regular engine noise as the engine is right behind me but my father found it more noticable. We test drove a newer one before and didn't remember that sort of noise but I know they changed then engine after 99.So,what does everyone think?
Thanks
Frank

Not there to hear it...

but it sounds like the typical Boxster "whine".....Sounds like a turbine on a jet airplane ;) ....
