shifting rpm

Hi Guys,

this is probably a silly question, but what is the optimun rpm to shift at on a 2000 S 3.2L?

de-snorkeled, clear lights, sports exhaust, zeintec hard top, zein wing, B&M short shifter, DesignTek lowering springs, DesignTek carbon fibre strut brace front and rear, 18'' carerra 5 spokes, semi slick tyres, entire soft top delete, engine cover delete,red console,L&N deep sump, volo performance chip, raptor shift light, de-cat'ed, OEM GT3 bucket seats.

Once fully warmed up (~ 10 miles)...

Around town = 3,500 - 4000 rpm.

Open road = 4,500 - 5,500 rpm.

Never above 6,500 rpm, its not worth the effort - but thats just me....

Sorry, to make it clear: was meaning what rpm to shift at for the best 0-100km/h / 0-60miles/h time.

Redline. The torque at the wheels is always highest in the lowest gear at full throttle.

My 2004 S Tip will shift at 6,200 in auto, which is peak hp. If there was any other optimum rpm for acceleration, I'm sure Porsche would have programed it into one of the five shifting maps.

In sport mode PDK runs to redline in every gear. I've never driven a tip, don't know if there's different modes. Max accelleration is at redline in these cars.

Banging off the redline is fine as long as you don't mind the event being recorded in the cars data base. Too many events look a lot like abuse. My Tip is smarter than me, by shifting at 6,200 the engine is always in the sweat spot of the rpm range and the maximum power is utilized right at the shift points.

Anything beyond 6,200 rpm's and the engines power noses over...at the same time my Tip is shifting into the next gear and accelerating faster.

As for that redline, all I have to do is go into manual and test that rev limilter anytime.

This is a perfect excuse to get some track time. I would test some of the theory's at an Autocross event with your local PCA if you haven't already. They are inexpensive to do and a lot of fun especially if you have never gone before. Be carefull though because it could lead to what I call "track Addiction" which is not a bad thing in my humble opinion.

All you need to find out is a stopwatch, preferrably with a friend operating it. Time from a rolling start (to eliminate any launch variations) , to a predetermined speed, say 15-85 MPH, that will give 2 shifts, ending in 3rd without going to redline.

Generally speaking, you want the largest area under the H.P. curve. To do this you want the H.P before and after the shift to be roughly equal. With every HP curve/gearing combination I've seen, that means shifting past peak HP by 500 RPM or so.
