HELP!!! Lug Key broke!
 

Went to remove my passenger rear wheel...put the lug key on the factory lug wrench and pop! The key is cracked all the way around...where do i find one? i cant seem to even get a single one on ebay. :mad:

If you truly want another wheel lock key, stop reading now. Because I dont know and can't help there.

However, if you're still reading.....

Are you sure you want to get a new key? Are you really that concerned about wheel theft? I've had wheel locks on cars before, and it's been my experience that those things only prevent one person from removing the wheels: the owner. Wheel locks break, get lost, etc. I really believe they are much more nuisance than they are worth.

If you live in a tough neighborhood and theft is a real concern, then keep the locks.

If you are not worried about theft, keep your car in a garage, and don't commonly park in bad places, then place the wheel locks in the trash and replace them with lug bolts. Any competent tire shop should be able to help with that, even if your key is broken.

I dont mind switching to a "regular" bolt...i just have to get this one off first. I highly doubt my local tire shop has the key for the porsche anti-theft bolt....Thanks though!

There's no way you're gonna find a wheel lock that'll fit your lock nut from eBay. That's cause there's like 30 different lock sets. Your dealer has all of them, and will have to try one by one to see which lock works. Once they find out which one it is, they can unlock it for you right there. Then, you can have them order the right one for you to keep in your car again. Or, you can just remove all the wheels locks there, and just buy 4 replacement regular lug nuts.

There may be a number on your key that will tell a Porsche dealer which key you need otherwise take your key & car to a dealer that stocks the key assortment & they should be able to sell you the right one.

I bought a McGuard equipped El Camino years ago and no key came with the car. I took it to a mechanic who used an impact air wrench with an appropriate sized socket and hammered the locks off, destroying the socket in the process. Since then I've removed any wheel locks that came with cars I've bought over the years. As a previous post stated, they only prevent the owner from removing the wheels.

I DID IT! Never keeping locks on my car again...by the way, after looking at it again, the lug key quality and build is terrible. eBay, chinese, tool kits are better quality. :(

Anyway...for those who run across this issue: I bought a deep metric 24, 12 point socket, then hammered and hammered away until it had made its own grooves on the outer most ring of the lug nut. I then looked to the sky and said a couple words, rubbed my hands together, and started to push. CRACK! :D (good crack, not bad crack for those wrenchers out there) it came loose.

Im proud...this is the first thread i have given useful information for a future searcher to discover and fix (with less hassle) :cheers:
