Which engine to swap to....

I have a 2002 Porsche Boxster, 6 Cylinder, 2.7 L, 5 speed, I am looking to swap my engine. I have read a few threads already but I want to get right to the point. If I just swap engines what would be the best engine that is a direct fit? With this engine swap I am going to need a better transmission, a 5 speed is not going to cut it. What transmission would be good, would it be worth it to convert to a triptronic?

Lucky for you flat6innovations.com is in GA too. You should read their website to see what they can do for your engine, &/or sell your car & buy a "S" with the transmission you want.

With the 2.7 and egas, I'd go with a 3.6 or money permitting a 3.8.

I have a 3.4L in my 99 with the original 5-speed which works fine. The only complaint (and it's a small one) is that I wish 5th gear was taller because with the the 3.4 it's too short imo. I think I read on the forums that the 2.7 5-speed is geared a bit taller in 4th and 5th than the 2.5 so you may not have this issue.

Deep Pockets and Big Balls!!

Get the 4.0L engine from flat 6 innovations if your wallet permits. You're probably going to have to get more than just a new transmission with 440 bhp minimum.

Best in what aspect?

And what is your wallet size? Your experience? Looking for a turnkey solution? The condition of your current engine (so we can see if a trade up would help the $)?

Best...heck I'll bet Jake would engineer a custom 4.0 with some sort of blower on it but it would probably cost you what a new Boxster S would cost.

Or there are the 3.x 996 do-it-yourself swaps.

And lots in between.

If you are trying to change transmissions, it may be better $ to change cars.

Real performance at elevated levels costs more money than its worth in some instances.. Carried out incorrectly it can lead to a problematic car filled with gremlins, check engine lights and issues.

Approach this with care and understand that bigger isn't always better and there is more to an engine than its net HP output. The big picture isn't always seen by those wearing blinders.

you want what kind of tranny?

why is a 5 speed not going to cut it? what can you do with a 6speed that you can't do with a 5speed? I heard that the g87 getrag 5speed from a base boxster or cayman 987 is the best porsche transmission for a boxster. it is lighter than the six speed and there is no use for an extra gear if your engine has a decent powerband, other than saving fuel. and a tRiptronic, as you call it(Porsche calls their regular torque converter and planetary 5speed automatics tiptronic) is used, the car will be slower and get worse fuel milage. the tiptronic automatic transmission adds 150lbs in the worst possible spot, the very rear of the car. the PDK, if you can work out the electronics to install one, might be faster and get better milage than the regular standards or automatics, but handling would still suffer from the extra weight even if you if you could work out the electronics.
