What about the one on the back of the convertible top relay, Pin 18? I am not sure if it is a discreet or analog signal.
You also might be able to use the one on the back of the radio. Can't remember the pin # but I am 90% sure the wire is blue.

Are you using an inductive pickup (like on a dyno) or are you probing it? You can take the signal from the coil packs or trace it back to the DME and get it there. I don't know the wire colors on a 986 but you can find it at the coil on one of the cylinders.

Pin #18 is a speed signal not a tach signal. It was to keep you from operating the top while moving.

Pin#9 on the OBD port. Violet/Green Wire

The pin # changes depending on which year car you have but the wire color doesn't.

You can also find the Violet/Green wire at the DME as well.
