Catalysts Rattling

'99 with 92K. CEL not on. Not heatshield.

What are my alternatives to stop the noise??

Many thanks,

Boston Tom

Could you describe how you know that the catalysts are the problem and what the noise sounds like? I have a rattle that is related to the exhaust and I don't know what it is.

I had a low RPM rattle on a thick metal shield on my passenger cat (not the flexible diamond pattern stuff all over the underside of the body) and it drove me NUTS.

So I jacked up the back of the car on jack stands, rolled under the car with a hammer in my hand, and started tapping bits and pieces to see if I could duplicate the sound.

When I found it, I whacked the crap out of it a couple of times (felt real good btw) and took the car for a drive. Problem solved!

Your rattle may not be inside your catalytic converter itself. Check it out and bring a hammer with you just in case you can fix it while you're looking to isolate it.

Cats Rattling--enough to shake your fillings!

Thanks guys.

No it's definitely the cats--put it up on a hoist while running.

I've had & fixed the heat shield problem before--not this time, unfortunately.

What I was hoping to hear, has anyone replaced their cats with the straight pipes or whatever.

Thanks!
