97 Boxster Tachometer Problem

I have a 97 Boxster and the tachometer is not working. My dealer told me that 9 times out of 10 it is the instrument cluster and the actual tachometer that is usually the problem.

I disconnected the instrument cluster and sent it complete to a good speedometer/instrument repair place in North Carolina. The tech said that the instument cluster is good. They were able to hook up a TN signal to the tach and test it out. The tach worked and completely checked out.

I am awaiting the return of the instrument cluster to plug back in. I am not anticipating any resolution and have spent $200 plus dollars to find out it was not the cluster.

Before I continue spending money, I would like to know if anyone has had this problem. Could it be the DME and can this problem be repaired economically.

I can get along without a tach but I cannot believe fixing this could be so difficult.

Bill
