Bump Steer
I am experiecing steering wheel feedback from bumps and cracks in various road surfaces. I have replaced inner and outer tie rods, drop links and new shocks and strut bearings.
Any ideas on the cause of this condition? JD Boxster 2000 986 2.7 |
when did it start doing this ? how are the tires ? are the sway bars stock ? alignment good ? got milk ?

Please elaborate on what you mean by "feedback".

Bump steer
The feedback thru the steering wheel is a quick minor steering wheel pull when engaging a bump in the road. Car has brand new Conti Sport tires , stock sway bar.
Alignment performed recently and no problems found. Could it be the rack? JD BOXSTER |
How many miles did you put on those new tires???

My first choice would be contol arm bushings, rack bushings if it has them, then the rack itself. I would carefully verify the rack valving is off by making slight adjustments on the steering wheel while at speed and notice the response. I would look for an over reaction in steering will little steering wheel adjusting. You didn't specify but I assume, the new tires was to correct this problem heh. |
Have you checked the airpressure in the tires?
Is the car lowered from stock height? |
Bump steer is a "feature" of the Boxster, unfortunately.
If you're cornering over cement slabs, on a freeway overpass or on-ramp for example, as the rear suspension compresses the car will oversteer. I installed one of Pedro's super braces to combat this effect. It's better, but still there. It's a side effect of the rear end being designed to understeer if you chop the throttle mid corner. This is one of the things that made me decide to buy a Ferrari. I was pretty sure the it wouldn't do this. Sure enough, it doesn't. I still love my Boxster, but not as much in certain types of corners. |
