how serious is this warning light?

hi, just got a p-reg boxster 2.5 last week. drove it around (as you do) and suddenly an amber lit up on the dash. the light has the word 'check' inside it and refers to the emissions control system. took it back to the dealer who 'fixed' it only for it to reappear! most of the time it is constantly on but sometimes it flashes. the dealer said it will cost serious cash to put it right but i have my doubts as a mechanic friend of mine says there is nothing wrong and and may just be a sensor malfunction.

how serious is this problem? has this happened to anyone before and can it be fixed outside of the dealership?

please help

If you have an issue with the emissions system it can be serious. Take it to a third party who can actually do an accurate and trustworthy diagonosis. It MAY ge a sensor or it may not be. You friend is not at risk here, you are.

Good luck and keep us posted.
