Superseded part numbers...
 

So Vertex screwed up my order and sent me a superseded flywheel. I have a 2003 Boxster S and the part number that is on their site and every other site is 986 114 012 06. The part that they sent me is 986 114 012 04.

Is there really any difference between the two parts? Hard to imagine they would change the number without making some kind of change to the part. Really makes me mad that I spent a premium price for a part that has been superseded. Especially since there is a guy on ebay selling the older part number for $454. If I had known, I would have got it from him

I have no knowledge of the difference but agree with you. They should make it right with you one way or another, your choice.

Just call them up, and tell them that they sent you the wrong part number.
You ordered part number 986 114 012 06, but received part number 986 114 012 04, and you would really appreciate it if they would send you the part you ordered, quickly.

I am sure they will send you the correct part.

If they won't, call your CC company, and dispute the charges.
Then you might be able to get to keep the part you have, anyway.

The problem is that they are being very persistent about it being the correct part for my car, even though it has been superseded by the new number. I'm about to just send it back and order the correct number from pelican. Did Porsche change something between the two parts? I am forced to think they did b/c why else would they change the number

gwoodburn, why not contact a local Porsche dealer's parts dept. and ask them if there is indeed a difference, and maybe they might be able to even tell you what that difference is?

Because unfortunately the dealer will not give out part number information. Already tried :)

I talked to a guy at a different dealership and while he still did not give part numbers, he made the point that Porsche definitely changed something between the old and the new. Whether they did something significant like change a thickness or material, or change something as silly as 'Tom' is assembling them instead of 'George', he didn't know. It is still in the air if they are actually different.

I think what I am going to do is look at the Luk manufacturing number, which on my older Porsche part number is DMF042. If i can determine that the Luk number from the newer Porsche part number is the same as the older Porsche number, I will assume that they only changed the Porsche number without making any changed to the actual part.

This is all so frustrating

Call Suncoast Porsche, they will tell you if you have the right part...I buy everything from them and I'm in California. Best part shop ever.
