Check Engine Light?
SO I just picked up my Boxster (99) base from the port. when I turned it on I noticed the check engine light is on. Not blicking but I still would like to know if maybe this comes on if there are just minor things wrong. Also it feels like the shifter linkage is a little loose.
I just bought this car and I was wondering if there are any things I should look at (beside IMS) for driving it too much. P.S. got it up to about 131 mph on the way home. OMG :D |
unplug the battery, let the computer reset. Drive a little, if light comes back on, then I would start by getting the codes.
I have had the light turn on before and never came back.... James |

Bad idea...........if I just bought a car, and it threw a code, I'd want to get the code(s) read so I know what I have gotten myself into............... |

codes are saved in the computer. even if you unplug the battery.
When you unplug the battery , you reset the light. It may be that it threw a code and it will never do it again. If it does it again, then you know that it is a true problem. How else can you prove that there is a problem unless it happens twice. These cars are too expensive to start replacing parts at random. I have read on here where a code is posted and 15 different possibilities are presented. The code can be pulled at any time. To clear a code from the memory, you must have a reader and choose "reset codes" |
Thanks guys,
I guess my next question is where can I get a code reader. I live on Maui and there is not one dealer here I would want to take it to for the first time. I am more of a hands on kind of guy. |
obd ii scanner
I bought mine from Amazon.
Search, "obd ii scanner". Good luck. |

thanks guys,
I will order one and figure it out. I am driving the piss out of this car and it is not giving me any problems so I am sure it is something minor. Redline testing very fast accelerations fast shifting nothing seams to bother this thing. already turning head of the tourists here in Maui. I LOVE MY BOXSTER HOPE IT LAST ANOTHER 76000 miles. |
hmmmm,
So i found one fuse that was out. I replaced it disconnected the battery and the engine light was off. After driving it about 1/2 mile the light came back on. Guess I will have to order the tester and check the code. Whoever had this boxster really took care of it. Everything is so clean. The cd player and a/c control and the entire dash area look brand new. No wear and tear on anything. The shifter boot is completely ripped and wore to crap. But aside from that it is all very nice. I hope the Engine was treated and mantained just as well. |
