Rubbing sound from Wheel/ Brake?
 

Off and on for the past month or so my back passanger side wheel/ brake has been making a rubbing sound. I didn't think much of it because it was a soft noise, you really had to listen for it. So today i was driving and it wasn't making any noise, then i pulled into my neighborhood and heard this terrible rubbing almost grinding noise from that wheel. I thought i had just ran something over and i had gotten stuck under my car. I got out and there was nothing there. I got back in and drove only a few feet and it made the noise again. I still don't know whats making the noise. It's comming from my back passagner wheel. I think it might be that the brake calliper is stuck, but when i drive it, it doenn't feel like the break is stuck. Any one know what this might be?

My guess would be a bad wheel bearing or warped rotor.

Second guess would be trans axle related but I doubt it from what you describe.

Suggest an immediate intervention on this sound.

The possibilities are numerous. Get it into a shop and don't keep driving it this way.

I had a squeak in the front of my car when going over bumpy roads or speed bumps that I ignored and later found out it was a worn out control arm... could have killed me had I addressed it later instead of sooner.

The Car is a 1998 with only 7,500 mile. So i don't think i would be a warped rotor.

Unlikely but possible. Sometimes these birds are defective as new and warp very quickly. My son had a bad rotor at 12K on his BMW.

Go figure.

Ok so i took my Boxster in Yesterday to have it look at. He took the wheel off and checked every thing out and he couldn't find anything wrong with it. He said that it might just have been something that had gotten stuck under the brake calliper

I have a squeal on the left front wheel and it just started happening to day as a drove the first mile or so. I put it back in the garage immediately. I just talked with Jeff Gamroth at Rothsport and he suggested the same thing you were waying, "something, probably a rock or pebble has wedged itself somewhere". He said it can happend from time to time and I live on a short gravel road so it may be the problem. Tonight I will take of the the squealing front wheel and have a look. Jeff said it was important to not turn the disk when the wheel is off before taking a flashlight and checking out the calipers and pads. He felt that if you turned it, whatever is in there could drop out and you wouldn't notice it and then you would be scratching your head trying to find the "problem". I may have to take out a pad or two to get to the problem.

I will let you know what I find out.

I took off the left front wheel and took a flashlight and looked all around the brake calipers and rotors and found a small rock (pebble) lodged between the metal housing that surrounds part of the inside side of the rotor and the rotor itself.

A little nudge with a flat head screw driver removed the rock and all is well again. Since I had not driven it very far after first hearing that awful noise I couldn't feel any wear ridge or scoring so I think I'm good to go.

Flossing is the cure!
 

Had the same problem here. Really nasty grinding sounds from my front right.

I had a feel around with my hands, behind the disc and used a cable tie to 'floss' the metal surrounds on the inside of the disc. It's totally gone.
