Question for Jake re Aussie installer

Jake,
Do you have a recommended installer in the Sydney NSW area for the IMS retrofit to my 2001 S (which I assume will have a single row bearing)?

Or you could fly here for a free holiday & work on my car for a few weeks.

Jake Raby 06-14-2010 04:04 AM

I have lots of friends in Australia and I'd love to make the trip..

I currently do not have any Australian installers, there have been a few shops that have done the work, but to date I haven't chosen one to be our partner..

Pinarelloman 06-14-2010 10:23 AM

Jake,
If you don't want to put their names on the forum, can you PM me a couple in the Sydney area please.
Thanks for your time.

Steve Tinker 06-15-2010 10:52 PM

I would also be more than interested in getting this information from either of you as my 2001 S now has 72,000Km on the clock and am not intending to sell soon - a definate keeper so I may as well have someone reputable to replace the bearing and install a new clutch at the same time.
Jake - looks like you going to get a working holiday in Sydney and then have to come up to sunny Queensland - I hope you drink beer........ :p

Jake Raby 06-16-2010 04:24 AM

I have a close friend in Queensland, I have been convincing him that he should focus more on the M96 Porsches more than the older cars that he works with now.. He came here last July and trained for a month.

I'd love to make the trip, perhaps we could get several owners together and I could borrow some shop space and do enough procedures at once to make it worth the trip for me ???

Pinarelloman 06-18-2010 09:35 AM

If that sort of thing is possible, I will happily send my car to QLD for you to work on. Then I can fly up & drive it home.

How many vehicles would you require to make this a viable proposition for you Jake?

Jake Raby 06-18-2010 11:10 AM

I'd need to do at least 4 retrofits.. I'd rather do a total of 6 to make it worth my time away from the shop and to recover from the 26 hours in the air!

Pinarelloman 06-18-2010 09:12 PM

Want a deposit now?
I am sure we could get 6 people together for IMS retrofits.
What is the going price for them in AUD$.

Jake Raby 06-19-2010 03:08 AM

What the charges will be would be dictated by the shop that we'd be doing the work in.. I'd rather have a chassis dyno available for before/ after comparisons..

Costs would be around 3K US for my full service, including tensioner cleaning/ replacement and internal inspections.

Get 6 cars together and I'll start looking for a place to work. I can bring all the parts and tools with me. Once the 6 cars have been rounded up we'll get deposits, probably just enough to cover my air fare, the rest we can do while I am there.

I should have one of my engine assembly classes while I am there, I have several Aussies interested in attending them here, there would be better.. But I would need an M96 engine out of a car for this.

Pinarelloman 06-19-2010 09:34 PM

Jake, you are obviously very busy with your work over in the USA. Do you have any preferred time frame for coming over here? Eg Christmas etc or is there another time when business is quiet.

It sounds like Steve is a starter for the IMS upgrade & I am also.
Can your mate who works on air cooled Porsche's get another four starters? I would also be interested in assisting with the work on my vehicle if possible.

PS Don't drink the beer in Queensland it is spelt XXXX & tastes like cats P ;)
Though we lost the State of Origin to them (again)

Jake Raby 06-20-2010 04:48 AM

January would probably be best.. I have scheduled M96 engine assembly classes in November, December and February..

I'd think we can find 4 more pretty easily in the next few months..

Pinarelloman 06-20-2010 10:25 AM

OK January is fine for me. Hopefully Steve will read this soon....

Steve Tinker 06-21-2010 01:37 AM

OK guys, sorry for the delay. I have just spoken to the Finance Minister (I'm married to) & got the OK for the upgrade by Jake.
Anytime would be fine for me - I can work around the dates but need to know which major city the revamp is going to take place......
Jake / Pinerelloman, I don't know if we have to use this forum for the (finer) details of the potential upgrades, but the ball is in your courts. You can contact me via a PM anytime you have a few minutes to spare.

Jake Raby 06-21-2010 08:08 AM

I need to find a shop with a lift... Anyone have any connections?

Pinarelloman 06-21-2010 10:58 AM

Any chance of renting some shop space from your buddy? Can you give us the approximate location of his business?

Jake Raby 06-21-2010 11:12 AM

He is currently working for Pratt and Whitney on turbine engines without a shop to work from..
He is looking for an appropriate shop for me, it will be somewhere in Queensland.

Pinarelloman 11-01-2010 08:53 AM

Jake,
Is there any chance of this happening in January next year?
The reason I ask is that I am currently looking at having it done by a local Porsche specialist who uses the LN Engineering IMS retrofit.
If you look like coming then I will wait.
The part that scares me is they quoted me $25000 AUD for a Porsche reconditioned engine if mine lets go.....plus remove & install.

Jake Raby 11-01-2010 11:46 AM

To make it happen in January I'd need all the commitments ASAP!

Steve Tinker 11-01-2010 05:06 PM

Sorry guys, but I have already had the LN IMS assembly retrofitted a few weeks ago. Charles Navarro gave me the name of the importer in Sydney who in turn put me onto a local Porsche specialist shop.
When no further correspondance was forthcoming on this thread since last June, I thought that the Jan trip for JR was not going to happen due to lack of participants.
Like Pinarelloman, I wanted the IMS kit fitted sooner rather than later. I just hope I havn't stopped Jake coming over to Australia and sampling a good Queensland beer or two :p

Pinarelloman 11-01-2010 05:18 PM

Jake,
I am still interested but we need more participants. Unless a few Aussies on here step forward, I would say it is off.
I am giving consideration to having mine done at the moment but will wait and see if there are any replies here from interested parties.
Thanks.
