Is This The Beginning Of IMS Failure???
1998 Boxster, 26,XXX miles, not started for about 3-4 weeks. Upon startup there
is a metallic sound for about 1 sec, very short. Oil just changed about 2 months ago and about 60 miles put on the car. Oil was Mobil 1. Tiptronic trans. No smoke on startup. Belongs to my sister and I have thought about buying it because she bought it new and I know the history. Any insight would be appreciated. Rob C., Tampa |
That just sounds like the lifters clacking before they get oil, not a problem as that's how it works. Let it sit for a day and you'll get the same sound. IMS is a tick and it won't go away till it seizes.

Thanks, I'll keep my fingers crossed. The car has never made that sound and
we were worried that it might be something more sinister. Rob C. |

Chain tensioners are dirty or one has failed. Or the 4/5 chain wear pads are shot...
or all of the above... Or you are still using ****edit****edit*** |
Jake, you mentioned Mobil 1. Is there a problem with that.

Too many to mention..............

Ok I was curious. Did a search and found "Engine noise 06 Boxster S". Now I see
where Jake was coming from! Have no problen switching to Amsoil, Royal Purple etc. Glad it's maybe more of an "oil problem" and not IMS. Was not aware there was a controversy over Mobil 1 here or anywhere else. Thanks again. Rob C. |
Well, I personally want to wait until I have many more miles (currently 41k) before I go to Royal Purple....but I do know what I want next oil change...
